Insider: Oilers' Potential Trade Deadline Target Won't Be "Sexy"

The Edmonton Oilers have been looking to add to their blueline all season, and they got a freebie last week when they were able to sign unrestricted free agent John Klingberg on the cheap, without giving up an asset.

But they're not finished, according to reports, intending to add yet another d-man by the trade deadline. However, per insider Pierre LeBrun on TSN's Insider Trading, it won't be a big splashy name... nothing "sexy."

There's a chance they add another piece to their blue line, but I don't think it's gonna be terribly sexy... Right now, I think they like their seven guys, but maybe (want to add) a little more depth.

They want to have another long playoff run, and another body on the backend, someone more in a shutdown role, that's the kind of thing they're looking at between now and March 7th.

Klingberg hasn't joined the Oilers lineup as yet, but it's expected he could be paired up with Darnell Nurse, while Troy Stecher, Brett Kulak and Ty Emberson will battle it out for the other two spots. With Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard manning the top pairing, that's the seven the Oilers are rolling with for now, until the deadline.

But a shutdown kind of guy, as LeBrun notes, and preferably a right-shot, would be something they'll continue to look for.

The Oilers are currently second place in the Pacific Division, just one point back of the Vegas Golden Knights for top spot.
