"Make No Mistake: Trades Are Coming"—Penguins Still a Major Seller at Deadline
"No one is safe." That's the word on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster as the team gets closer to the trade deadline. (Of course, #87 and #71 aside).
Josh Yohe of The Athletic tells us that the 100-point pace that the Penguins have played at since late November, getting them back into the playoff conversation (four points back of a Wild Card spot heading into Thursday's games), has not changed the calculus of GM Kyle Dubas as he approaches March 7th.
The improved results have not changed Dubas’ mindset. He’s going to sell.
League sources expect the Penguins to make multiple deals. Marcus Pettersson is as good as gone, but don’t be shocked if other veterans are included. A league source said “no one is safe” on the Penguins, except players with full no-trade clauses, such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Make no mistake, trades are coming.
It will be "an aggressive approach" from Dubas, writes Yohe.
The goal of going younger, which began at last season's trade deadline has carried forward into the current campaign. The acquisitions this season of Philip Tomasino and Pierre-Olivier Joseph are just two examples, but there will be more coming.
In addition to Pettersson, the list of names who could be moved is long and lengthy, and includes Matt Nieto, Matt Grzelcyk, Blake Lizotte, Michael Bunting, Noel Acciari, Drew O'Connor, Jesse Puljujarvi, Anthony Beauvillier, and Cody Glass.
As we said at the top, "no one is safe."
