NHL Trade Rumors: Capitals Interested In Islanders' Brock Nelson

The Washington Capitals are reportedly targeting New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson as a potential trade deadline acquisition, according to Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News

Nelson, 33, is in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract and set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Nelson has contributed 14 goals and 16 assists in 47 games this season, and his experience in 82 postseason games makes him an attractive option for playoff-bound teams. Despite his slight decline in scoring pace this year, his two-way game and ability to adapt to various roles is a nice appeal.

With a league-leading 33-10-5 record, the Capitals are looking to solidify their forward depth for a deep playoff push and adding Nelson would be a big addition.

Rosner notes that Washington is comfortable acquiring him as a rental, even though most suitors might prefer a trade with extension talks.

However, Nelson’s $6 million cap hit could be a problem for the Capitals, who currently have $3.65 million in cap space. The Islanders would likely need to retain part of his salary for a deal to be feasible, which could increase the cost for Washington.

Potential trade assets include young defensemen Ryan Chesley or Vincent Iorio and prospect Hendrix Lapierre.

While the Capitals are unwilling to trade key roster players like Aliaksei Protas, they appear eager to bolster their lineup around Alex Ovechkin for another Stanley Cup run.

Rosner adds, “The Capitals aren’t afraid of making Nelson a pure rental,” noting their readiness to deal some future assets to add some immediate upgrades.
