NHL Trade Rumors: Oilers Linked To Ducks' John Gibson
Speaking on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio, Pagnotta explained that while the Oilers are evaluating multiple roster upgrades, their interest in Gibson depends largely on the status of forward Evander Kane.
If Kane is unable to return for the regular season, his $5.25 million cap hit could be shifted to LTIR, giving Edmonton the flexibility to pursue a significant addition.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if they at least inquire about Gibson," Pagnotta said, adding that Anaheim is now more open to retaining salary to facilitate a deal.
Oilers are expected to prioritize blue-line help at deadline, but LeBrun & Johnston suggest John Gibson could still be a target.

Jeff Skinner hasn’t worked out in EDM, Pickard could be Dostal’s backup, and a sweetener might be enough to get retention on Gibson’s deal.

Gibson, 31, has been a consistent presence in net for the Ducks but has long been a trade candidate as Anaheim undergoes a rebuild. With two years remaining on his contract at a $6.4 million cap hit, salary retention by the Ducks could make him a viable option for teams like Edmonton, particularly as they aim for a deep playoff push.
Pagnotta noted that the Oilers’ interest hinges on whether they prioritize upgrades in goal or defense, with the team ranking in the bottom 10 in save percentage despite Stuart Skinner’s solid efforts and Calvin Pickard’s capable backup performances.

The Oilers face a big decision ahead of the March 7 trade deadline as they assess whether Gibson is the right fit for their Stanley Cup aspirations.
His playoff experience and ability to handle a starter’s workload make him a potentially valuable addition, but questions remain about whether his cap hit—even with partial retention—is the best use of resources given Edmonton’s defensive needs.
As Pagnotta observed, "If Kane is done for the regular season, they may even be a little bit more aggressive," making Gibson one of several options for the Oilers to consider.
