Penguins Ready & Willing To Make Multiple Trades
Almost anything seems to be on the table for the Pittsburgh Penguins this season as we are two months out from the trade deadline. The Penguins are tied with the Columbus Blue Jackets in points for the second wildcard spot, but the race is extremely tight. Every team from the second wildcard spot to last place in the conference is within seven points of each other.
That being said, the Penguins are looking to make a number of moves this season to help their future more than help their current situation. Elliotte Friedman reported that the team has made it clear that forwards, defensemen, and goalies are all available.
The Penguins have nearly $2 million in projected cap space by the end of the season and have the ability to retain salary on just one more player. By moving pieces out such as players on expiring contracts like Marcus Pettersson, Cody Glass, and/or Anthony Beauvillier, it frees up even more potential cap space for the Penguins to take on contracts as well.
Friedman also reported that Pittsburgh is willing to utilize their cap space by doing as such if it gets them young players, prospects, and draft picks, in that order.
The Penguins' goal differential is very poor, but they have still managed to stay in the playoff hunt because of their top players. The team has already won three Stanley Cups under the Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang era, and even though the plan was to go on another couple of runs, the future is more important to not have to go into a deep rebuild for many years.
Expect the Penguins to be very active in the coming weeks and more than just players on expiring contracts could very well be traded.
