Penguins Rumors: Pittsburgh Looking To Move Rickard Rakell?

Trade rumors surrounding Pittsburgh Penguins forward Rickard Rakell continue to circulate, but a midseason move appears increasingly unlikely.

The 31-year-old winger has been a cornerstone of the Penguins’ resurgence this season, leading the team with 20 goals and forming a key part of their offensive core alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

While Rakell’s $5 million cap hit and consistent production make him an appealing trade target, Penguins GM Kyle Dubas has shown little interest in dealing him.

According to Josh Yohe of The Athletic, "Dubas doesn’t feel any extreme desire to deal Rakell," adding that only an "outrageous offer" would prompt a move.

Rakell’s contract, which runs through 2027-28, is expected to become more manageable with next season’s salary cap increase, making a summer trade a more realistic option.

Teams are likely to have greater financial flexibility to acquire a player of Rakell’s caliber at that time. Despite his lack of a no-trade clause, which gives the Penguins room to explore potential deals, Rakell’s versatility and steady play make him too valuable to lose during a playoff push.

Yohe suggested a summer deal could allow the Penguins to maximize their return without jeopardizing their current playoff aspirations.

While other players, such as defenseman Marcus Pettersson, are seen as more likely trade candidates, Rakell remains central to the team’s immediate plans.

Moving him now could disrupt the Penguins’ momentum and send a negative message to the locker room as they battle for a postseason spot.

For now, Dubas seems intent on keeping Rakell in Pittsburgh.
