Report: Canucks and Blue Jackets have discussed blockbuster trades

The Columbus Blue Jackets continue to be the feel-good story of the NHL this season, and it turns out, exceeding expectations so far this year, could result in a massive trade before the March 7 trade deadline.

According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun Columbus and Vancouver have engaged in talks surrounding Elias Pettersson heading to the Blue Jackets. There's also been several trade rumors circulating that J.T Miller has been involved in talks, and Columbus should be seen as a wild-card team for the veteran forward to waive his no-movement clause for. Miller wants to play on the eastern time zone of the United States, is what's been gathered from trade talks so far.

According to LeBrun, the Blue Jackets are solely focused on Pettersson at this point. The 26-year-old doesn't have any trade protection until next season, and can be moved at will. The Swedish center recorded 102 points back in 2022-23, inked a massive contract, and has struggled since. So far this year, Pettersson has just 11 goals and 21 assists in 44 games.

As for Miller, he's been linked to the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and even the Carolina Hurricanes, who apparently aren't finished. Meanwhile, Pettersson is owed $11.6 million AAV for seven more seasons. The Blue Jackets have a ton of cap space and considering they're sitting in a wild-card position in the Eastern Conference, look for GM Don Waddell to spend some cash, and some assets via trade to upgrade his roster for a playoff push.

Keep an eye on Kent Johnson, who could be heading back to the Canucks if these two teams finalize a Pettersson deal. Of course, much more will need to be included to facilitate the deal.
