Report: Hurricanes rejected Canucks' trade offer before Avalanche blockbuster

The Carolina Hurricanes have sent shockwaves throughout the entire NHL. The 'Canes pulled off a wild three-team trade to acquire both Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall, and it turns out they'd been talking blockbuster trade for a few weeks.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes had discussed trades involving both J.T Miller and Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks, and chose to go with the package deal of landing both Hall and Rantanen from the Blackhawks and Avalanche. GM Eric Tulsky showed off some serious stones pulling out the three-team deal, and was able to get the Blackhawks to retain half of Rantanen's salary for the 2024-25 season. Given Carolina a chance to keep $1.2 million in deadline cap space, leaving room for another deal before March 7.

As far as the Canucks and Hurricanes go, they've been talking trade for quite some time. This wasn't the first time the Hurricanes made a play for Pettersson. Carolina and Vancouver reportedly engaged in trade talks for the Swede last season before the Canucks signed Pettersson to an eight-year, $92.8-million extension in March.

Both Miller and Pettersson are likely to be moved, with Miller at 100% on being dealt before March 7. Pettersson it seems, is more like 75% being dealt, 25% staying with Vancouver through the deadline.

As for the Hurricanes, don't be surprised if they land another goaltender before the deadline. Meanwhile, the Avalanche have been linked to Sidney Crosby - and at this point, anything can happen.
