Report: Washington Capitals to sign Logan Thompson to long-term extension

The Washington Capitals are in the process of locking up goaltender Logan Thompson to a long-term extension. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports the deal could be for six seasons, and in the ballpark of $36 million total.

Thompson, 27, has been stellar in his first season in Washington, posting a 22-2-3 record through his first 27 Capitals' appearances. He's been everything the team hoped for, and then some, acquiring the southpaw tender last offseason from the Vegas Golden Knights. Thompson has recorded an impressive 2.09 goals against average and .925 save percentage so far this year, and somehow, was left off Team Canada's 4 Nations Face-Off team.

Thompson is owed just $766,677 against the cap this season, and will see a huge pay raise coming to start the 2025-26 season. No word yet if the deal includes trade protection.

The Capitals enter Monday's action with a 33-11-5 record, sitting atop the Metropolitan Division. Thompson is in the running for the Vezina trophy, and fully expect to see the Capitals upgrade their roster heading into the March 7 trade deadline. One position they don't have to worry about moving forward? Goaltending.
