Tony DeAngelo Finished in KHL After 34 Games

All it took was 34 games, and veteran defenseman Tony DeAngelo's KHL career has come to an end.

The two sides have decided to part ways, with DeAngelo the leading scorer among defensemen on SKA St. Petersburg, and third among all rearguard in the KHL. "Family reasons" are being cited for his departure, and the New Jersey native is returning to North America.

DeAngelo had six goals and 26 assists for 32 points in his 34 games in Russia, with a plus/minus rating of +15.

The 29-year-old spent eight years in the NHL, with 210 points in 371 games, 329 penalty minutes and several controversial moments. The Philadelphia Flyers bought him out of his $5 million contract after a troublesome 2022-23 season under head coach John Tortorella, who left DeAngelo as a healthy scratch for several games late in the season.

In his most recent NHL season, '23-'24, he played just 31 games for the Carolina Hurricanes, serving as a 7th defenseman. He was hoping to land an NHL offer last summer, but none was forthcoming, forcing him to accept the SKA deal.

DeAngelo was a first-round selection (19th overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2014 NHL Draft. He spent four years with the New York Rangers, and one with the Arizona Coyotes before going to Philly.
