3 Non-Rental Defenseman Listed For NY Rangers to Target
The New York Rangers will be busy at the trade deadline, with several players likely on the way out, including potentially two defensemen in Zac Jones and Ryan Lindgren. They will have to bring back a D-man or two, but they're not really looking for rentals. Per Rangers insider Vincent Z. Mercogliano, "The Rangers are on the hunt for any pieces they see as multi-year fits in the lead-up to the deadline."
And with that, he has listed three non-rental blueliners that should be on the Blueshirts' target list:
Jamie Oleksiak, Seattle Kraken
If the Rangers are looking to "bulk up" the left side, as Mercogliano notes, the 6'7" Oleksiak would certainly be able to do that. He comes with a contract, however, that features a not-too-cheap $4.6M cap hit through next season. He has logged 19 minutes a game or more in each of the last five seasons, blocks plenty of shots, and usually hands out a fair number of hits with his sizeable frame. His numbers in the latter category are down this year, however, with just 44 hits in 57 games. It's the third straight year that number has decreased.
Carson Soucy, Vancouver Canucks
Another "monster" on the blueline, Soucy brings a 6'5" frame and also carries another year on his deal, with a $3.25M cap hit. He's another left-shot D-man who can help fill the void if and when Lindgren is dealt.
The 30-year-old had a nice first season in Vancouver last year, but has struggled this season, and the team has made him available, particularly since landing Marcus Pettersson from Pittsburgh.
Mario Ferraro, San Jose Sharks
The 26-year-old is a younger, though smaller alternative than the first two on this list. He does use the body, however, with 117 hits thus far this season in 57 games. Ferraro has logged well over 20 minutes a season over the last five years for the Sharks, and comes with one more season on his $3.25M AAV. He brings a solid defensive mindset to the blueline.
