3 Potential Trade Destinations for Blues' Jordan Binnington
Jordan Binnington's trade value hasn't been this high in a very long time, and with the St. Louis Blues under .500 and eight points out of a playoff spot with less than two weeks to the trade deadline, there's gaining momentum that Blues' GM Doug Armstrong will listen.
The Blues have 24-year-old Joel Hofer in the mix, who has appeared in 20 games this year, posting a 10-7-1 record, along with a 2.88 GAA and .903 save percentage. With the Blues re-tooling, and named a team to watch ahead of the trade deadline, now could be the time to pounce on moving Binnington, and upgrading up front.
Here's three teams who could trade for Binnington:
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes aren't shy to make bold moves, and they have been linked to finding a new 'goalie for the now' since Frederik Andersen can't stay healthy, and the fact the 35-year-old netminder is a pending free agent. Binnington earns $6 million AAV for two more seasons, and while he holds a 18-team no-trade list, the Hurricanes are a Stanley Cup contender, and they have a slew of young forwards who could appeal to Armstrong in St. Louis Blues.
Detroit Red Wings
Steve Yzerman used a quantity over quality approach last summer to bring in a few goaltenders, including Cam Talbot, but landing Binnington would be a massive upgrade for the current second-wild card team in the Eastern Conference. The Wings aren't short on young, NHL ready talent, and they also have loads of cap space to make a splash before the deadline. Keep an eye on Motown, these two teams align, and there could be some momentum here if Armstrong is open to offers.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Kyle Dubas is in very tough with a $5 million goalie in the minors, but perhaps if he's willing to eat some of Tristan Jarry's salary, he could sweeten the pot enough to land Binnington in Pittsburgh. The Penguins continue to be win-now mode, despite the results, and Dubas has made several moves that have been head-scratching when considering their direction. Getting Binnington in the crease would be a huge shot in the arm for a team who could really use one.
