Blues Trade Rumors: St. Louis GM discussing Binnington, Schenn trades
The NHL's trade deadline is just over a week away and rumors are swirling St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong is getting aggressive on the trade market, discussing both his captain Brayden Schenn and goaltender Jordan Binnington.
The Blues sit with a 27-26-6 record on the year and are four points back of a playoff spot. Regardless, they are expected to re-tool even though the postseason is still within reach. Schenn has been rumored to wanting to team up with his brother Luke, and both be traded to the same team ahead of March 7. Schenn has a full no-trade clause and will have full control over where he winds up. There's rumors that the Maple Leafs, Canucks and Jets are the most aggressive right now trying to land the two-way center. Schenn has three more seasons on his deal at $6.5 million AAV, and has posted 34 points in 59 games this season.
Binnington, on the other hand, is a bit of a different situation as the goalie trade market is rather thin at the moment and he's coming off a 4 Nations Face-Off tournament that sky-rocketed his trade value. The 31-year-old Richmond Hill, ON native is 17-19-4 on the year, with a 2.82 goals against average. Binnington is signed through the 2026-27 season at $6 million AAV and owns a 18-team no-trade clause. As far as suitors go, the Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes continue to be linked to the Stanley Cup and 4 Nations winner.
The Blues also have veteran blueliner Ryan Suter who continues to get trade interest, along with bottom-six forward Alexei Toropchenko. There's an outside chance Armstrong flips the core of his team and moves one of Jordan Kyrou or Robert Thomas, but for now, it seems much more likely Schenn and Binnington get moved first, especially with Joel Hofer ready to become the permanent starter in St. Louis.
