Breaking: Vancouver Canucks Sign Marcus Petterson To Big Extension

He's only played two games in a Vancouver Canucks uniform, but those robust 49 minutes of ice time were all the team needed to see, to lock up blueline newcomer Marcus Petterson to a huge six-year extension with a $5.5 million AAV.

Pettersson was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins this week for the first-round pick that they acquired in the JT Miller trade with the NY Rangers.

His new deal comes with a full no-move clause in the first three years, then a 15-team no-trade list in the final three years. The deal takes him until age 35.

And while some might question if the Canucks moved too quickly on this, former NHLer Mike Rupp, now with NHL Network, thinks Pettersson is underrated and is a top-five defensive defenseman in the NHL.

"They got a good one in Vancouver," said Rupp.

He has immediately taken up residence in the Canucks top-four on the blueline, and played an average 24:30 of ice time in his first two games, with three blocked shots and three hits.

On the season, the Canucks' latest Pettersson (joining the two Elias Petterssons) is averaging 22:09 ice time, with 18 points in 49 games and a plus/minus of -2. In his career, he has finished all seven of his previous NHL seasons with a "plus" rating, and is +77 overall in 493 NHL games.
