Canadiens Rumors: 2 Teams Linked To David Savard

The Montreal Canadiens currently have a 25-24-5 record and are seventh in the Atlantic Division standings. Overall, they have taken a step in the right direction this season, but given where they are in the standings, they are likely to shop some of their pending UFAs. David Savard is one of them who has created chatter in the rumor mill.

Savard is starting to generate interest, too, as The Fourth Period reported that the Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning are currently linked to the right-shot defenseman.

Hearing that the Oilers have their eye on Savard is understandable. While they recently signed John Klingberg, there is no question that the right side of their defense needs some serious help. Thus, bringing in a shutdown defender like Savard could be big for them. He could slot nicely on their second or third pairing if acquired. In addition, he would offer them another option for their penalty kill.

The Lightning know Savard well, as they acquired him from the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2020-21 season. This trade ended up benefitting the Bolts, as Savard provided them with solid defensive depth during their Stanley Cup championship run. With this and the Bolts' blueline needing a hand, reuniting with Savard could make sense for both parties.

We will need to wait and see if what the Canadiens decide to do with Savard, but these two clubs undoubtedly need to be watched closely.
