Flames Rumors: Trade Deadline Needs For Calgary

The Calgary Flames find themselves in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, sitting just outside the final wild-card spot with a 27-21-8 record.

While general manager Craig Conroy is still focused on building a long-term team, he is still open to making moves that provide some help immediately.

“If he is going to trade, he would prefer to add for the future, someone that can help them now and later,” Elliotte Friedman reported.

After acquiring Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee from the Philadelphia Flyers to boost their forward group, the Flames are still searching for a right-handed center who can win faceoffs and a left-shot defenseman to pair with MacKenzie Weegar.

Buffalo’s Dylan Cozens has been mentioned as a potential center option, while the team remains focused on adding a defenseman to solidify their blue line.

Goaltending is another area Calgary could address, with Dustin Wolf emerging as the clear starter.

Veteran backup Dan Vladar has struggled this season, posting a .888 save percentage and a 3.07 goals-against average in 22 games, making him a trade candidate before his contract expires.

Carolina and Tampa Bay have shown interest, and moving him would free up a roster spot for AHL standout Devin Cooley, who has impressed with a .924 save percentage.

The Flames also have flexibility to facilitate other trades, with forward Yegor Sharangovich potentially available. Sharangovich has underperformed after signing a five-year extension, making both players names to watch as the deadline nears.

Calgary’s position in the playoff race puts them in a unique spot to act as both buyers and sellers. “Our team has put us in the race, and they deserve a little help. Our guys have earned that,” Conroy said.

While the Flames have pushed back on inquiries regarding veterans like Nazem Kadri and MacKenzie Weegar, they remain open to opportunities that will work with their long-term outlook.
