The 33-year-old has appeared in just 13 games to this point in his 14th season in the league and has one goal and three points. He is averaging less than 16 minutes of ice time per game and is a -7. He is making more hits than he normally does and got some time on the power play this season, but there are just lots of options on defense and he hasn't made his mark.
The Flames have seven other defensemen that have played at least twice as many games as Barrie this season, including even Joel Hanley. It also appears like the team would like to see more from Ilya Solovyov, so by keeping him up with the team, someone has to be demoted.
Barrie's last good season came in 2022-23 with the Edmonton Oilers and the writing was on the wall when he didn't fit in with the Nashville Predators and was a healthy scratch for much of the games. The veteran was a late signing this season to fill a void, but the Flames have done just fine with him out of the lineup more often than not. I wouldn't be surprised if Barrie calls it a career after this season as he hasn't shown enough to warrant another contract.
