Insider: Blues' Brayden Schenn "Has Vegas Written On Him"
The news hit hard last week when it was revealed that the St. Louis Blues are shopping captain Brayden Schenn. Blues GM Doug Armstrong is not happy with his team's season, and he will be shaking things up. Schenn still has three years to go on his contract at a $6.5 million cap hit.
Where would the eight-time 20-goal scorer be headed if Army pulls the trigger? According to insider Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast, the Vegas Golden Knights stand out for him as a likely destination.
Vegas really jumped into my mind because Brayden Schenn played for (GM) Kelly McCrimmon in the Western Hockey League (as a junior) and... You don't underestimate Kelly McCrimmon. When he decides that he wants someone, he will do whatever it takes to get that player. The more I wondered about Schenn's availability, I thought, 'Okay, McCrimmon knows this player, he's a McCrimmon type player...'
It's got Vegas written on it.
The Golden Knights are known for going out and making big-time splashes at the deadline in the past, and nobody expects this year to be any different. Last year, they swung big deals for Noah Hanifin and Tomas Hertl, and the year before they got two-time Stanley Cup winner Jonathan Quick.
Vegas is looking to get back to the Cup finals themselves, where they were victorious just two years ago. Currently, they go into the 4 Nations break tied with the Edmonton Oilers at the top of the Pacific Division (Edmonton with one game in hand), with a 33-17-6 record for 72 points.
The 33-year-old Schenn, in his 16th NHL season, had recorded four 20-goal seasons in his last five years, but has seen his production drop a bit this tough campaign for the Blues in St. Louis, with 11 goals and 32 points in 56 games.
