Insider Provides Big Injury Update On Islanders' Mathew Barzal

On Feb. 3, the New York Islanders announced that Mathew Barzal would be out indefinitely due to a lower-body injury. Now, a big update on the Islanders star has been provided by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun.

According to LeBrun, Barzal had a procedure done on his kneecap that usually has an estimated recovery timeline of six weeks. However, LeBrun also noted that it can vary.

With the Islanders being one of the several teams in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race, it is certainly far less than ideal that Barzal is expected to be out for several weeks. At the time of this writing, the Islanders currently trail the Detroit Red Wings by four points for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Barzal, 27, has appeared in 30 games this season with the Islanders, where he has six goals, 20 points, and a plus-10 rating. This is after he had 23 goals to go along with 80 points in 80 games last season with the Islanders.

We will now need to wait and see how the Islanders perform without Barzal in the lineup over the next several weeks from here.
