Insider Reignites Brad Marchand to Oilers Rumors
No matter how hard he tries to extinguish them, the trade rumors about Brad Marchand just won't go away. Boston Bruins' GM Don Sweeney, in a roundabout way, left open the possibility of his team being sellers at the trade deadline while addressing the media on Monday. A bad week or ten days, and the Bruins just might figure this season is a write-off.
Insider Renaud Lavoie of TVA told the crew on the Real Kyper & Bourne podcast that we simply cannot rule out the potential of a Marchand trade.
"I believe that if they're sellers... What's going to happen with their captain Brad Marchand? I won't rule out the possibility that Brad Marchand won't finish the season with the Boston Bruins, even though he doesn't want to go anywhere."
And further to that, he gushed about Marchand's ideal fit with the Edmonton Oilers:
Let's say the Oilers are calling for Brad Marchand. What do the Bruins do? And if you're Brad Marchand, what do you do? You have a chance to go win a Stanley Cup in Edmonton with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl? C'mon.. I'm pumped just thinking about it!
With Evander Kane still M.I.A. this season and his return a complete mystery, Marchand's feistiness and grit would be a huge addition to the Oilers lineup.
What could the Oilers offer? They don’t own their first-round pick in the 2025 Draft, but their 2026 and 2027 first-rounders are still there. Do they dare include top prospect Matthew Savoie in a package? They have stated that they have no desire to move the 9th overall pick from the 2022 Draft (acquired from the Buffalo Sabres last summer). He was just called up from the AHL and has played the last two games with Oilers. Could it possibly be a showcase? Either for the Oilers themselves to see what he's made of at the top level, or as a massive trade chip?
Even though neither Marchand nor anybody else can envision the Bruins captain in another uniform, crazier things have happened. Wasn't Steven Stamkos a slam dunk to finish his career with the Tampa Bay Lightning?
"Like I said, Brad was laughing at all the rumors when we talked to him during the 4 Nations Face-Off," relayed Lavoie, "and he said 'I'm not going anywhere.' And that's totally understandable... But at the end of the day, is he going to be a Bruin next year? I'm not sure he's going to be a Bruin next year."
Marchand is in the final season of his eight-year, $6.13 million AAV deal with Boston. He's at 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points in 58 games on the year. The captain has spent his entire 16-year NHL career in Beantown.
