NHL Rumors: Avalanche & Blues Linked To Trade

Evan Rawal of The Denver Gazette recently linked St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn to the Colorado Avalanche as a potential solution to their second-line center issues.

Since Nazem Kadri’s departure in 2022, Colorado has cycled through multiple options, including Alex Newhook, J.T. Compher, and most recently, Casey Mittelstadt.

While Mittelstadt has 32 points in 57 games, his -13 rating and 41.8% faceoff win percentage have raised concerns.

Rawal noted that Schenn, a proven two-way forward with a 50.1% faceoff success rate, could be an ideal fit for the Avalanche. “Coach Jared Bednar talked recently about the team not having enough players getting to the net. That wouldn’t be an issue with Schenn,” Rawal wrote.

Schenn, 33, has 32 points in 56 games this season and plays a more physical, net-front style that Colorado lacks.

His leadership and close friendship with Nathan MacKinnon would ease his transition into the locker room, but his $6.5 million cap hit through 2027-28 makes a trade difficult. St. Louis would likely demand a significant return, and Rawal noted that “any deal for Schenn is tricky because it involves a division rival.”

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently reported that Schenn has drawn interest from multiple contenders, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights, adding another layer of competition if the Avalanche pursue him.

To make a deal work, Colorado would likely need to send Mittelstadt the other way to match salaries, something they can afford with Gabriel Landeskog’s contract on long-term injured reserve.

St. Louis has not indicated a strong desire to move their captain, but with the trade deadline approaching, Schenn remains a name to watch.

"There was a lot of interest when Schenn’s name came up last week," Friedman reported.
