NHLTR Mock Trade: Seattle Kraken deal Yanni Gourde, Brandon Tanev to Toronto Maple Leafs
The NHL's trade deadline is set for March 7, and just because the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament is taking over the hockey world for the next two weeks, doesn't mean trades won't be firing across the NHL.
While we've covered almost every report and rumor throughout the trade market in early 2025, we've also begun our mock trade series. Recently we suggested Buffalo Sabres Dylan Cozens being moved, as well as Brad Marchand being dealt by the Boston Bruins. For our latest, we head out west to Seattle and suggest where Kraken forward Yanni Gourde may end up:
NHLTR Mock Trade: Kraken trade Yanni Gourde and Brandon Tanev to Maple Leafs for Max Domi, Conor Timmins and Topi Niemela
A lot to unpack here. First off, Gourde is currently on the IR, but is expected back after the 4 Nations tournament. The Kraken would have to retain at least 10% of both players salaries, in order for the Leafs to have any interest. It sounds like GM Brad Treliving has been asking teams to retain salary in most of his trade talks.
Domi has been a disappointment so far for the Leafs, however, he does have a 13-team no-trade clause, so would need to approve this move to the Kraken, a team where he could end up having a much bigger role. Timmins has some potential as a bottom-pair right-handed option, and Niemela is the Leafs' best defensive prospect, and is having a strong season with the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
Gourde and Tanev would give Craig Berube a couple of solid options to reshape his third line, which is the Leafs' biggest question mark heading into the trade deadline. They've used several combinations throughout the season but haven't been able to find any success. It's in large part to the inconsistent play of Domi, Nick Robertson, and Max Pacioretty.
Leaf fans, Kraken faithful, how do we feel about this trade proposal?
