Penguins Rumors: Evgeni Malkin Speaks On NHL Future

Evgeni Malkin made it clear that he has no plans to retire or play anywhere other than Pittsburgh. 

In an interview with The Athletic’s Rob Rossi, Malkin dismissed speculation that he might finish his career in Russia, stating, “I retire with Pittsburgh. The Penguins are my team. I love this team. When I retire, it’s here.” 

While he left open the possibility of playing a farewell game for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, he insisted that his NHL career will end with the Penguins. He also ruled out the idea of accepting a trade, reinforcing his desire to stay in Pittsburgh no matter what.

Malkin, 38, is in his 19th season with the Penguins and remains an important part of the team. 

After missing six games with a knee injury suffered on January 25 against Seattle, he is set to return Saturday against the Washington Capitals. With 34 points in 47 games and an average of over 18 minutes of ice time per game, he continues to be effective offensively. 

His return comes at a critical time, as the Penguins sit six points out of a playoff spot and will need all their top players to make a late push. 

His longtime teammate Sidney Crosby has also committed to finishing his career in Pittsburgh, and the team's owners, Fenway Sports Group, want to keep both players with the franchise for life.

Malkin’s contract runs through the 2025-26 season, and he has not decided if it will be his last. However, if he signs another deal, it will be with the Penguins. 

The team hasn’t won a playoff series since 2018, and he hopes to change that before he retires. “It’s my dream for [my son] to see us in playoffs—make good memories for him,” Malkin said.
