Cozens, soon to be 24, is having a down season, recording just 10 goals and 26 points in 53 games. He's landed 118 hits, and is just over 50% in the faceoff circle. Cozens, despite the lack of production, averages 17:24 of ice-time for the last place Sabres.
GM Kevyn Adams admitted earlier this season that Buffalo is not a destination city for free agents to sign, so it makes sense for Adams to go the trade route to try and upgrade his roster. However, moving the 2019 first-round pick is certainly a risky transaction, and one if Adams misses on, could be the final straw in him being fired.
The Sabres are also reportedly open to moving defensemen Owen Power or Bowen Byram for the right price. It's not out of the question to see the Sabres completely re-tool their core heading into next season.
As for Cozens, NHL proven talent will be wanted in return, as well as at least a first-round pick, or top prospect. For the Leafs and Canadiens, who play with the Sabres in the Atlantic Division, expect to see Adams lay down a premium, and ask for either club to sweeten the pot if they want to finalize the deal. Nothing worse than trading an underperforming one-time top prospect in your organization to a divisional rival, just to have him find his groove again.
