Report: Dallas Stars Have Massive Offer on the Table for Pending RFA Wyatt Johnston
21-year-old Wyatt Johnston is proving that his impressive first two seasons in the NHL were no fluke, and the Dallas Stars are getting ready to make their rising star a rich, young man.
According to insider Nick Kypreos, the Stars "would love to" lock in the pending RFA well before July 1, in order to stave off the frightening possibility of having him poached by a huge offer sheet.
It's believed the Stars have an offer on the table in the ballpark of $65 million over eight years that they hope will entice him.
That's an $8.125 million AAV. Not bad for a kid who won't turn 22 until the middle of May (which the Stars hope will be still early in their playoff run this spring). And in all honesty, that would be a bargain for Dallas, given the rising cap over the next few years.
The Stars stole Johnston with the 23rd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, and in his arrival in Dallas in 2022, he wasted no time acclimating to the league, scoring 24 goals with 41 points, with a plus/minus rating of +6. He finished 5th in Calder Trophy voting.
That was followed by a 32-goal season as a sophomore with 65 points and a +14 rating, but he didn't stop there. His performance in the playoffs last spring had some believing he could have even been in the conversation for the Conn Smythe had the Stars made it to the Finals. He finished with 10 goals in 19 games.
This season, Johnston hasn't let up. He's on pace for a career-high in points, already setting his personal mark for assists with 34, while adding 17 goals thus far for 51 points in 58 games.
It's easy to imagine some massive offer sheet being thrown at him immediately on July 1st, so Dallas is trying to head that off at the pass.
