Report: Scott Mayfield Scratched, "Very Possible" A Trade Could Be Incoming

In only Year 2 of a 7-year deal, veteran New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield seems to be falling out of favor with head coach Patrick Roy. He was a healthy scratch on Tuesday night in their 5-1 loss to the NY Rangers, after logging just 10 minutes of ice time in each of the previous two games.

Now, according to Russ Macias in NYI Hockey Now, a trade could be incoming.

It sure seems like there’s going to be a trade coming out from this group. It’s nine bonafide NHL defensemen. Depending on game results, who could be sent out will vary...

It’s become very possible the Islanders may ask Mayfield to waive his NTC to head somewhere else... They may not get much in return, but teams usually go crazy for big-bodied right-shot defensemen with playoff experience.

Mayfield, 32, has a whopping five years left on his deal, but it's at a reasonable $3.5 million cap hit. He does have a full no-trade clause. The 11-year veteran actually has a plus/minus rating of +13 this season, but most of that was procured during a fine month of November when he was playing 20:37 a night and posted a +10 during that period.

Roy said of Mayfield, "When he's ready, when the time comes, we'll put him back in the lineup. I'm sure he will be ready."

Would there be a market for the 6'5" D-man. The term is tough, especially at his age, but with his size, and right-shot defenders always at a premium, contending teams could be interested.

The crowded blueline on the Island is getting even more congested, as Noah Dobson is set to return this week, and Mike Reilly's return isn't far off. Obviously, nine D-man is a couple too many.
