Report: USA's Charlie McAvoy admitted to Boston hospital

The 4 Nations Face-Off is starting to take a toll on Team USA. As they were preparing for their meaningless matchup Monday night against Team Sweden, reports started to circulate that Boston Bruins' defenseman Charlie McAvoy had been admitted to a local hospital.

The Boston Globe reports McAvoy has an upper-body injury. Per the report:

Charlie McAvoy was admitted to Mass. General Hospital Monday night as Team USA was battling Team Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off at TD Garden, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed. McAvoy has a history of shoulder woes and had surgery in 2022 for a left shoulder arthroscopic stabilization procedure. It’s unclear if his latest injury is related. McAvoy isn’t the only member of Team USA that is hurting. Forwards Matthew Tkachuk (lower body) and Auston Matthews (soreness) also sat out. Additionally, Brady Tkachuk left in the first period after crashing into a net post, leaving the team with just 10 forwards.

The American's take on Canada Thursday night in a highly anticipated rematch. Saturday's game was wild from start to finish, with USA coming out on top after both Jake Guentzel and Dylan Larkin scored questionable goals. Against Sweden on Monday, Gustav Nyquist and Jesper Bratt scored, giving the Swedes a 2-1 victory against the shorthanded Americans.

At this point, McAvoy is not expected to play against Canada in the final on Thursday.

UPDATE:

Sources say Team USA 🇺🇸 defenseman Charlie McAvoy was admitted to the hospital on Monday night with an infection that stemmed from a minor injury.

He is fine and there is no long-term concern. McAvoy’s status for Thursday’s final is undetermined, he has not been ruled out.
