Report: Utah Working On Contract Extension For Karel Vejmelka

The Utah Hockey Club is working to extend goaltender Karel Vejmelka as he approaches free agency this summer.

In their first season in Salt Lake City, Utah has remained competitive with a 25-24-9 record, sitting fifth in the Central Division and within reach of a playoff spot.

A key reason for their success has been Vejmelka’s steady play, as the 28-year-old Czech netminder has posted a 2.57 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage while compiling a 14-15-4 record with one shutout.

Head coach Andre Tourigny has relied on Vejmelka to keep the team in games, and his performance has made him a priority for Utah’s front office.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that contract negotiations are ongoing, with recent goaltender deals serving as benchmarks.

Vancouver’s Kevin Lankinen signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract ($4.5 million AAV), while Colorado’s Mackenzie Blackwood landed a five-year, $26.25 million deal ($5.25 million AAV).

With Vejmelka earning $2.725 million this season, his next contract is expected to increase with how important to the team he has become.

“I just believed in myself. My mindset was to be positive and do the right things every day,” Vejmelka has said about his journey to the NHL.

Despite Utah’s efforts to lock him up long-term, Vejmelka has drawn trade interest, particularly from the Edmonton Oilers, who are looking to shore up their goaltending for a playoff run.

If he remains with Utah past the deadline, finalizing an extension will be a top priority to ensure stability in net as the team continues to build.

“It was a pretty difficult journey, but it is something special for me that I am here right now,” Vejmelka once said, and Utah appears determined to make sure he stays.
