Sabres Rumors: Red Wings Linked To Dylan Cozens

The Detroit Red Wings have been linked to Buffalo Sabres center Dylan Cozens ahead of the March 7 trade deadline, as they continue searching for a long-term solution at second-line center.

Despite signing Andrew Copp and J.T. Compher in recent years, neither has solidified the role, making Cozens an intriguing option. With three years remaining on his contract at a $7.1 million cap hit, Detroit has the financial flexibility to absorb his deal without shedding salary.

However, Buffalo is not interested in prospects or draft picks, instead seeking an NHL-ready player in return.

MLive’s Ansar Khan reported that while Jonatan Berggren could be expendable, “the Red Wings are unlikely to part with top young talents like Marco Kasper or Simon Edvinsson.”

Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now noted that Cozens has been on Detroit’s radar for months, but the Sabres’ asking price complicates trade discussions.

“If they move Cozens, and they may not, they want a player, or players, back who help them now,” Allen wrote. The Red Wings’ recent 15-4-1 run under head coach Todd McLellan also makes them hesitant to disrupt team chemistry.

Kasper, who has been excelling on Dylan Larkin’s wing, is expected to transition back to center, potentially reducing the urgency to acquire Cozens. While Detroit remains in the mix, Allen suggests a trade could be difficult unless Buffalo lowers its demands.

Insider Kevin Weekes reported that Detroit is one of several teams, including Montreal, Calgary, and Toronto, monitoring Cozens’ situation.

His performance this season adds another wrinkle to trade talks, as he has just 11 goals and 27 points in 54 games after scoring 31 goals in 2022-23.

Given the uncertainty surrounding his form and Buffalo’s preference for an immediate impact player, a deal with Detroit remains far from certain.
