San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche emerging as trade partners

The San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche are two teams heading in opposite directions. The Avs are a legit Stanley Cup contender, meanwhile the Sharks are poised to be in the mix to win the NHL Draft Lottery. Regardless of the standings, these two teams are emerging as potential trade partners once again heading into the March 7 trade deadline.

According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Sharks are listening to trade offers on defenseman Mario Ferraro, with the Avalanche becoming a likely landing spot. The two teams have already spun a big deal this season, which saw Mackenzie Blackwood land in Colorado. Blackwood has been dominant for the Avs, so perhaps GM Chris MacFarland wants to double down on acquiring a Shark.

Ferraro is signed through next season at a $3.25 million AAV cap hit. The left-handed defenseman doesn't have any trade protection. Colorado currently has $3.9 million in available cap space and could fit Ferraro in with ease.

The 26-year-old blueliner is averaging 20:28 of ice-time per game so far this year, including 2:24 on the penalty kill. Ferraro's known as one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, who doesn't mind throwing his body around, already landing 115 hits, while blocking 77 shots.

The Avalanche and Sharks have done business together, and significant business, so it should come as no surprise the two teams have once again been linked to facilitating a trade before March's deadline.
