The Latest on Brock Boeser's Future with Canucks

Coming off a 40-goal season, pending unrestricted free agent Brock Boeser has certain numbers in mind he'd like to reach on his next contract, but if the Vancouver Canucks aren't willing to go there, a trade at the March 7th would be the prudent action to take.

Based on recent developments, like the new salary cap projections, and a recent signing the Canucks made, the scales don't seem to be tilting towards a Boeser extension. As noted by Jim Parsons in The Hockey News on Sunday, "it doesn't sound like the two sides are close."

TSN's Darren Dreger recently stated that "Brock Boeser is going to command a high dollar... probably more than the Canucks are going to want to spend... When you look at the cap projections, who can blame (Boeser's agent) for playing hardball?"

On top of that, Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal has pointed out that the recent extension swiftly granted newly-acquired defenseman Marcus Pettersson after just five days, was like "a slap in the face" to Boeser, who's been waiting a lot longer than that for a contract.

"So the Canucks signed Marcus Pettersson five days after they traded for him. Brock Boeser has been waiting seven months... He led the team in goals last year, he's second on the team in scoring this year. (But) on the Boeser contract front, I've been told it is still quiet.

"When you believe in a player, you sign him! Like (Marcus) Pettersson: five days after he got here... With Boeser, they're taking it down to the deadline."

Bottom line: If Vancouver wanted to meet Boeser's price on an extension, wouldn't they have done it by now?

The two sides are still in touch, so it's not completely over yet, but the chances of a Boeser signing are dwindling, while the likelihood of a Boeser trade is rising.

The 28-year-old (as of next week) has 18 goals and 35 points through his 48 games this season, but missed a bit of time earlier in the campaign with a concussion.
