NHL Rumors: Utah HC's Matias Maccelli Named As Trade Candidate
The Utah Hockey Club currently has a 25-24-9 record and does not hold a playoff spot in the Western Conference. With the 2025 NHL trade deadline rapidly approaching, there is an expectation that they will sell off some pieces at the trade deadline.
In a recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned Utah HC forward Matias Maccelli as a potential trade candidate to watch.
"Maccelli in Utah. He's been scratched a bit lately," Friedman said. "Was scratched Sunday night, too, against Vancouver. That's one to watch."
Maccelli, 24, has had a rough season with Utah. In 52 games, he has just eight goals, 10 assists, and a minus-13 rating. This is after he set new career highs with 17 goals, 40 assists, and 57 points in 82 games with the Arizona Coyotes last season. The expectation was that the 2019 fourth-round pick would take another step forward in his development this season, but that just has not come to fruition.
However, when noting that Maccelli has shown that he can produce like a top-six winger in the past, he would undoubtedly generate interest if he is officially made available by Utah. Keep in mind he also had 11 goals and 49 points in just 64 games with the Coyotes back in 2022-23.
We will need to wait and see if Utah ends up trading Maccelli, but he is someone who fans should keep an eye on as we continue to charge toward the March 7 deadline.
