3 Detroit Red Wings Contract Extension Candidates
The 2025 NHL Trade Deadline saw several teams make moves, and the league looks far different now. Yet, now that the deadline has passed, we won’t see any more trades until after the season. Although this is the case, we still could see teams sign players to contract extensions. As a result, we here at NHLTR will be going over three contract extension candidates from each team.
In this latest edition of the series, let's take a look at the Detroit Red Wings.
Patrick Kane
Kane is the Red Wings' top pending unrestricted free agent, so he is one of their contract extension candidates. The 36-year-old winger is still effective at this juncture of his career, posting 17 goals and 45 points in 56 games this season. This includes a two-goal and five-point night against the Buffalo Sabres on March 12. Will this be enough for the Red Wings to try to keep him around?
Alex Lyon
Lyon is another pending UFA who the Red Wings could look to keep around. The 32-year-old is having a solid season in a backup role for Detroit, as he has an 11-8-1 record, a .900 save percentage, and a 2.77 goals-against average. If he is willing to stick around at a cheap price, Detroit could extend him.
Albert Johansson
Albert Johansson is a pending restricted free agent who the Red Wings could aim to extend soon. The 24-year-old blueliner has made the jump to the NHL season, posting one goal, seven points, 47 hits, and 71 blocks in 44 games. He has also been given time in the Red Wings' top four and on their penalty kill, so they could reward him with an extension before the season is over.
