3 Detroit Red Wings Who Won't Be Back Next Season: Post Trade Deadline Fallout
The Detroit Red Wings are on a bit of a slide at a bad time as there are a number of teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs. They can turn it around, but instead of selling, they brought in a few pieces for not only this season, but next as well. There is a solid mix of young players and veterans, but some will have to go this summer.
Alex Lyon
Alex Lyon finally seems like the odd man out next season as the Red Wings appear to be going with the veteran duo of Cam Talbot and Petr Mrazek after bringing the latter in at the trade deadline. Sebastian Cossa will have another year under his belt and will head into the season as the third string and nearly ready to jump into the NHL. Lyon has earned his spot in the NHL as a backup goalie over the past few seasons, so he should sign with a team that has that role available to him.
Jeff Petry
Jeff Petry was not the add the Red Wings were hoping for when they acquired him before the start of last season. His offense has fallen off and Detroit is moving forward defensively without him through his injury. The veteran has played 34 games this season and has just six points and is a free agent in the offseason. With who the team has signed and who is coming up in the system, it will be an easy split from Petry after a disappointing two seasons.
Craig Smith
Craig Smith was brought over in the same deal as Mrazek, but unlike the goaltender, Smith is a UFA after the season and will likely test free agency. There shouldn't be too much of an incentive to sign the 35-year-old Smith for next season as he seems like just a body to bring in for a playoff push. A player like Jonatan Berggren needs to remain in the lineup and with a player like Smith taking up a spot, it would be an illogical move.
