3 Edmonton Oilers Who Won't Be Back Next Season: Post Trade Deadline Fallout

The Edmonton Oilers are set for another deep playoff run after adding at the trade deadline, but there have been some players that the team should be swapping out next season, whether that be due to some better pieces brought in or just too many players on the roster. Let's dive into three Oilers who won't be back next season after the dust has settled from the trade deadline.

Jeff Skinner

Jeff Skinner has unfortunately not been utilized properly in Edmonton this season. He has been up and down the lineup and even a healthy scratch more than a few times. He's never got an extended look in the top-6 where he would perform the best and even though he has been effective for the latter half of the season while getting playing time, it's been very rare to see him in the top-6. He is only signed to a one-year deal, so the Oilers will likely just open up the $3 million next season for other signings. Skinner will finally get a taste for the playoffs, but will want to be used properly while he still has game.

Calvin Pickard

Calvin Pickard has been serviceable, but for a team like the Oilers who sees their starter, Stuart Skinner, struggle often, the team needs an upgrade. Pickard still has one year remaining on his contract at $1 million AAV, so it will be no problem moving him or just using him as a third string for the final year. It is very clear that an upgrade needs to come in net after nothing was done at the trade deadline. We will see how the rest of the season and playoffs go, but that is the biggest thing holding back the Oilers right now and there will be upgrades available in the summer.

John Klingberg

John Klingberg was given a chance with the Oilers after a long rehab from an injury and has looked alright at times, but the Oilers don't have that much space for him to have a role past this season, especially after acquiring Jake Walman who has another year left on his deal and the strong play from Ty Emberson, Troy Stecher, and even Cam Dineen in his small sample size. Klingberg was an early fix, but the Oilers have gotten better since. Klingberg will likely sign with a team this offseason, but it won't be Edmonton.
