3 New Jersey Devils Who Won't Be Back Next Season: Post Trade Deadline Fallout
The New Jersey Devils have been hit hard by injuries this season and are falling in the standings, but are hanging on and should make it to the postseason. With all of their injuries, players have been given the chance to step up and step in, giving a more clear picture of what the team could look like next season as there will be players parted with.
Tomas Tatar
Tomas Tatar hasn't been great for the Devils this season after signing a one year deal to return after a couple of seasons. New Jersey was hoping for the Tatar they got last time around who scored 20 goals and put up 48 points, but have got only six goals and 15 points in 61 games. He is averaging less than 11 minutes of ice time per game and there is just no logical reason the Devils will move forward with this 34-year-old and give him another contract for the production he's put forth.
Brian Dumoulin
The Devils picked up Brian Dumoulin at the trade deadline to help fill a gap and give the team a better chance of succeeding in the playoffs. He wasn't cheap and is a UFA after the season. With the talent on the Devils when healthy, there isn't any room at all for the team to re-sign Dumoulin. He is a pure rental to give the Devils more of a chance to not only compete in the first round, but make it there with Dougie Hamilton out for the regular season.
Jake Allen
Jake Allen has done a solid job as the backup to Jacob Markstrom this season, but in the last year of the veteran's contract and Nico Daws hot on his trail, it is an inevitable decision to move on from Allen after 2024-25. Markstrom will still be the starter for the final year of his contract, but Daws has proven himself this season in limited action and the Devils don't want to lose him. Good, young goaltending isn't easily come by and he should be seen as the future. Allen should easily be able to find another team to play for.
