3 New York Islanders Who Won't Be Back Next Season: Post Trade Deadline Fallout

It has been a terrible offensive season for the New York Islanders and nothing much has ever changed under Lou Lamoriello. I expect that to be the case again, but there should be some smaller changes at the very least this summer after the fallout of the trade deadline.

Matt Martin

Matt Martin's time on the New York Islanders should be coming to an end. Longtime linemate Cal Clutterbuck saw his end with the team not long ago and Martin hasn't done much this season. The 35-year-old is a fourth liner that has seen his role taken over by players like Kyle MacLean and Marc Gatcomb who are much younger. Martin has one assist in 24 games and is averaging fewer than eight minutes of ice time per game. This isn't stats of a player that should be given another contract on the team, never mind the NHL next season.

Mike Reilly

Mike Reilly did well for the Islanders when he was first picked up last season, but with his health and the expected healthy roster to begin next season, he just won't have a place on the team. There are already too many defensemen in the mix, especially with Samuel Bolduc and Isaiah George pushing for spots in the NHL lineup. Reilly has only played 11 games this season, hasn't recorded a point, and has played less than 16 minutes per game when he has gotten in. He can probably get another NHL contract elsewhere in the offseason because he won't be playing in the NHL if he re-signs with the Islanders.

Adam Boqvist

It is a similar situation with Adam Boqvist as it is with Reilly. Boqvist was picked up this season and is only 24. He still has a long career ahead of him if he can stick somewhere, but even with two goals and five points in 12 games for the offensively challenged Islanders, 12 games is all that he's gotten and he played 14:30 per game. He is a RFA, but so is Scott Perunovich who was trusted with five more minutes of ice time per game when he got into NHL action. As I mentioned above, there are too many defensemen competing for so few spots and without an injured group, Boqvist won't even be considered to be kept around.
