Auston Matthews Calls Out Teammates as Leafs’ Playoff Hopes Hang in the Balance

Following a disappointing loss to the struggling Nashville Predators in what should have been a winnable game, captain Auston Matthews didn’t hold back in criticizing the Maple Leafs for their inconsistent performance.

It’s safe to say Saturday’s outcome against Nashville was far from what the Maple Leafs or Matthews had hoped for. Allowing five goals to the league’s lowest-scoring team is a troubling sign heading into the playoffs, and the team simply can’t afford to drop games like this.

John Tavares was visibly frustrated, and Craig Berube was left stunned. Now, Matthews has joined in, publicly challenging his team as they face a critical stretch in the standings, stating:

The inconsistencies aren't ideal, especially this time of year. When we have a bad outing, string together a couple of good games, then to have kind of another letdown like this, that's on us to make sure we're consistent no matter the situation.

It’s encouraging to see Matthews step up and take responsibility, as he should as the team’s captain, but the pressure also falls on him. While he’s been performing well lately, he hasn’t quite reached the extraordinary level he displayed last season.

Yes, he’s contributing more defensively and spending more time on the penalty kill than in the past, but for a player of Matthews’ caliber—currently experiencing the worst 5v5 shooting percentage of his career—it’s starting to feel more like an excuse than a valid explanation.

Matthews recorded two assists, and the power play found success once again, but the team surrendered two more shorthanded goals. Their lack of discipline and frequent trips to the penalty box remain major concerns.

After three strong games where the team looked cohesive, aggressive, and in control, their performance against Nashville was a stark display of indifference. If they can’t bring that same intensity against tougher opponents like Florida, Tampa Bay, or even Ottawa, another early playoff exit seems inevitable.

The Maple Leafs need to regroup as they prepare to face the Flyers at home on Tuesday. It’s another game they should win, and it will also mark Scott Laughton’s first matchup against his former team.

Now is the time for Matthews to regain his momentum, and the team must start capitalizing on these winnable games.
