BLOCKBUSTER: New York Islanders Trade Brock Nelson to Colorado Avalanche

The New York Islanders and Colorado Avalanche have completed a late-night blockbuster as Brock Nelson is on his way to Mile High.

Nelson, along with William Dufour traded from the Islanders to the Avalanche for top prospect Cal Ritchie, defenseman Oliver Kylington, a first-round pick in either 2026 or 2027 and a 2028 third-rounder. It's an absolute haul for the Islanders who take advantage of a sellers market and swoop not only the Avalanche's best prospect in Ritchie, but also a 2026 first-round pick, a draft that's going to be loaded with talent.

Nelson was made available this week by the Islanders after apparent contract talks broke off. While the Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs were very interested, the Avalanche delivered a package that Lou Lamoriello couldn't refuse.

Nelson is coming off a 34-goal season and is on pace for roughly 60 points this season. He's a streaky scorer who can find the back of the net in bunches, and gives the Avalanche another speedster among their top six.

The 33-year-old center is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and is making $6 million AAV. The Islanders are retaining 50% of his contract, and also immediately flipped Kylington to the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations.
