Blue Jackets Lock Down Versatile Power Forward

Inside sources are whispering that the Blue Jackets are on the verge of locking down rising winger Mathieu Olivier for the long haul. Darren Dreger of TSN reported back in December that the two sides had opened negotiations, adding last week that talks were heating up.

GM Don Waddell's recent comments suggest a four-year-plus deal is imminent, putting an end to weeks of speculation.

Mathieu Olivier, now in his third season with the Blue Jackets, is experiencing a remarkable surge in his career.

The 28-year-old is delivering career-best numbers, including 12 goals, 21 points, and a dominating 228 hits, all while finally securing consistent top-nine usage. This level of production showcases his development beyond a purely physical role.

Olivier's professional career began with the Predators' AHL affiliate in Milwaukee, where he earned an entry-level deal after going undrafted.

He navigated the challenging path between the AHL and NHL, eventually catching the eye of the Blue Jackets.

Columbus acquired him in 2022, and he has since become a consistent presence in the lineup, proving his value with both his physicality and his growing offensive contributions.

With his current pace, he is set to surpass his previous offensive totals, and his new contract will reflect his increased value to the team. While the recent Keegan Kolesar extension provides a point of reference, Olivier's role and performance in Columbus suggest he has earned a substantial raise.

As the Blue Jackets continue to build their roster, securing Olivier for the future is a key move, reflecting his importance to the team's ongoing development.
