Blues Rumors: One Team Is Out Of The Brayden Schenn Sweepstakes
It seems likely that the St. Louis Blues are going to move on from their captain Brayden Schenn even though he still has three more years remaining on his deal at $6.5 million AAV. At this time, he controls where he goes with a no trade clause on his contract. That clause turns into a 15 team no trade list for next season.
The Blues are a fringe team and they may or may not make the playoffs this season. It was revealed a bit ago that every player was available for the right price except one, and that wasn't Schenn. For a playoff team seeking a solid middle-six player who can play center or the wing and has the style of play perfect for the playoffs, Schenn is one of the top choices available.
The term might scare some teams as Schenn is 33 years old, but St. Louis has all three of their retention spots and can help move a potential trade along. Elliotte Friedman revealed that the New Jersey Devils were one of the teams interested in Schenn, but didn't like the asking price.
For a former Stanley Cup winner that brings what Schenn does to the table, it isn't going to be cheap, but the price should really fluctuate depending on how much is retained by the Blues. Three years of cap retention isn't nothing.
Schenn has 12 goals and 38 points in 62 games, is over 50% in the faceoff circle, and has 156 hits. He can be very useful for a team intending on competing for the next few seasons. The Devils lost Jack Hughes for potentially a while and are looking to upgrade, but seem to have a limit on what they are willing to pay for help.
The team desperately needs help in their bottom-6, so Schenn would've been a strong addition. We'll have to wait and see what the price to acquire the Blues' captain turns out to be if he is traded this season.
