Bruins Make Emergency Moves: Fabian Lysell and Michael Callahan Recalled from Providence

The Boston Bruins are shaking things up! In a move to bolster their lineup, the team has called up 2021 first-round pick Fabian Lysell and depth defenseman Michael Callahan from AHL Providence under emergency conditions, as reported by Conor Ryan of the Boston Globe.

With no extra skaters on the roster, the Bruins needed reinforcements ahead of Thursday’s clash against the Vegas Golden Knights, hinting at potential injury concerns—though it’s unclear who might be sidelined.

Lysell, once considered the crown jewel of Boston’s prospect pool, has had a rocky season in the minors. Despite being hailed as the Bruins’ top winger prospect by The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler, the 22-year-old has seen his stock dip.

Now third in the organization’s prospect rankings, he’s been overshadowed by Matthew Poitras (splitting time between the NHL and AHL) and Fraser Minten, who’s been lighting it up with four points in three games since joining Providence in the Brandon Carlo trade.

This season, with 11 goals and 23 assists in 51 games—Lysell has taken a step back from last year’s 50-point breakout. What’s puzzling is that Providence’s offense has been thriving, with players like Vinni Lettieri, Georgii Merkulov, and Patrick Brown all putting up big numbers, making Lysell’s struggles even more glaring.

As for Callahan, the 25-year-old defenseman is back with the big club after spending much of January and February in Boston.

The 6’2” Massachusetts native is still chasing his first NHL point but has been a reliable defensive presence in Providence, tallying one goal and seven assists in 43 games this season.

With his contract set to expire this summer, Callahan is playing for his future as he looks to make an impact in his latest NHL stint.

This duo’s arrival adds intrigue to the Bruins’ lineup as they gear up for a critical stretch of the season.

Will Lysell seize his opportunity and reignite his development? Can Callahan carve out a more permanent role? Bruins fans will be watching closely.
