Canucks Rumors: Thatcher Demko Could Be Targeting Linus Ullmark-Type Contract

According to Ben Kuzma of The Province, Thatcher Demko may be eyeing a contract similar to the one recently signed by Linus Ullmark, who landed a four-year, $33 million extension with the Ottawa Senators that carries an $8.25 million cap hit.

Demko, 29, has one year left on his current deal with the Vancouver Canucks at a $5 million AAV and is looking to finish the season strong to boost his negotiating position.

While Demko has yet to win a Vezina Trophy like Ullmark did in 2023, he was a finalist last season with a stellar 35-14-2 record, 2.45 GAA, and .918 save percentage.

The Canucks' decision to lock in Kevin Lankinen to a five-year extension at a $4.5 million AAV and the looming RFA status of 24-year-old Arturs Silovs gives the team depth and leverage in the crease.

But Demko's high-end ability when healthy still makes him a valuable asset. “There aren’t very many Demkos around,” said former NHL goalie Carter Hutton. “A guy with that high-end skill who is an elite No. 1, when healthy.”

Injury concerns—ranging from a groin strain to a popliteus knee injury and an undisclosed ailment this season—cast doubt on his long-term durability, but his recent performances since returning to the lineup have reminded many of his elite potential.

Whether the Canucks are willing to offer Ullmark-level money remains to be seen. A shorter-term deal with a higher AAV could be an option, but committing $8 million-plus annually would be a gamble given Demko’s health history.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff noted Demko’s decision to return without much practice time as a reflection of his character, adding, “I think that says a lot.”

With Vancouver in a playoff push and Demko playing well, he’s setting the stage to make his case for a major payday—whether it's in Vancouver or elsewhere.
