Dallas Numbers Revealed On Their Rantanen Extension Offer
The pending trade of Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes to the Dallas Stars is very much in limbo, and in fact, very much in doubt, considering the numbers being reported today.
According to insider Darren Dreger, the Stars "were willing to go to upwards of $12 million per to extend Rantanen." Alas, that won't be getting it done.
See where it goes, but I’m confident the Dallas Stars are/were willing to go to upwards of $12 million per to extend Rantanen. A big number for the Stars given contract challenges moving forward. Unless something changes, that’s well short.

It's not surprising that Rantanen wouldn't bite on a $12 million AAV, since another report from insider Kevin Weekes revealed that the Canes offered much more than that, closer to what he would get on the open market.
My colleague @KevinWeekes reported that the average annual value of the Hurricanes' offer to Rantanen was somewhere between $13-14 million https://t.co/2RoQue1PZz

The Carolina offer was said to be somewhere between $13M and $14M per year.
A tentative trade was struck late last night between the Hurricanes and the Stars, dependant on the Texas team being able to come up with an extension agreement. Negotiations between Dallas and the Rantanen camp went on into the wee hours of the morning. But they ultimately came up short.
From the sounds of it, about $14 million short ($2M/year on a likely seven-year offer).
