Flames Announce Rough Mikael Backlund Injury News

During the Calgary Flames' March 12 contest against the Vancouver Canucks, captain Mikael Backlund exited after a collision with Vancouver Canucks defenseman Victor Mancini.

Now, the Flames have provided an update on Backlund, and it is certainly less than ideal. According to the team, the veteran forward will be out week to week due to an upper-body injury.

With the Flames currently in a tight wild card race in the Western Conference and Backlund being one of their most important players, it is undoubtedly bad news that he is going to be out week to week. However, the Flames will now need to adjust to not having their captain in the lineup for the time being.

Backlund, 35, has appeared in 64 games this season with the Flames, where he has 11 goals, 24 points, and 39 blocks. This was after he had 15 goals and 39 points in 82 contests this past season with the Flames.

Backlund was selected by the Flames with the 24th overall pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and has spent the entirety of his 17-year NHL career with the Pacific Division club. In 1,054 career games as a Flame, he has 211 goals, 555 points, 787 hits, and a plus-62 rating.
