Flames Reportedly Trying To Trade Defenseman
The Calgary Flames hold the second wildcard spot in the Western Conference, but that shouldn't stop the team from moving some players out at the trade deadline. They may be in a playoff spot, but their first round matchup would be the Winnipeg Jets and they would have to go through a very tough schedule to go anywhere.
That being said, the core of their team would stay together, but Elliotte Friedman mentioned one defenseman in particular that the Flames are trying to find a new home, and that's Daniil Miromanov.
Miromanov debuted in the NHL at age 24 and at age 26 with only 29 games of NHL experience under his belt, was traded to the Flames in 2023-24. He has played 37 of a possible 60 games for the team this season, which means he has been a healthy scratch for a lot of games.
The Flames have eight defensemen on the roster right now and recently sent Tyson Barrie down. He was yet another body fighting for playing time on the back-end. Calgary has overachieved and exceeded expectations this season, but they are headed in the right direction.
Miromanov is a defenseman that can stay in the NHL, but the Flames have one of the most jam packed blue lines in the league and teams are always looking for defensive depth ahead of a playoff run. Whether the 27-year-old finds himself as a depth piece on a playoff-bound team or on a team on the outside of the playoff picture, he isn't going to fetch a very high return. The Flames will get a late round pick at best or even an average prospect.
For Miromanov's sake, his best chance is to join a team that regularly has injury problems or a team who is selling so that he can get some more consistent playing time for at least the rest of the season.
