Flames Showing Interest In Bruins' Defender
The Calgary Flames have had a strong season based on expectations and have a solid chance of making the playoffs. The team didn't want to go through a rebuild and they have avoided that to this point, but have to continue building off of the players they have.
To do that, while they are looking to move around some pieces, the team is also reportedly looking to bring in some talent, one d-man in particular from the Boston Bruins, who could very well be selling this season with some of the major injuries they have suffered.
According to Anthony Di Marco, the Flames have been in contact with the Bruins regarding Brandon Carlo, but the two teams have yet to delve into details about a possible trade yet. It seems like there aren't too many untouchables in Boston, so Carlo would definitely fall into the category of players that may be traded in what seems like a write-off year.
The Flames have eight defensemen on the roster, but are trying to trade Daniil Miromanov. On top of that, Joel Hanley can be upgraded, especially since he currently sits in the top-4. Miromanov could easily be a piece heading back to the Bruins to get some playing time and fill a roster spot for this season. He has another year left at $1.25 million AAV and shoots right, just like Carlo.
The Flames have Mackenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson as righties in the top-4 already, but Weegar would move over to the left side and create a tough duo to play against on the first or second pairing. Carlo has an eight-team modified no-trade clause and has two years left on his deal at $4.1 million AAV. This is a very affordable contract and makes sense for the Flames to get better this season and remain on the upswing with another proven defenseman in the mix.
The Bruins have to pay Mason Lohrei before next season and the team has five d-men who can play in the top-4 right now (not all healthy). This move makes sense for both sides, it's just a matter of who else is interested in Carlo if the Bruins are willing to trade him and what the price will be.
