Flyers News: Tortorella Makes Stunning Comments After Latest Blowout Loss

Has John Tortorella had enough of coaching the rebuilding Philadelphia Flyers? After their latest blowout loss, this time 7-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tortorella came out with some stunning comments, bluntly saying he hates coaching a team that's as bad as his is right now. Whoa.

While taking the blame for the Flyers' loss, he said "I'm not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season where we're at right now, but I have to do a better job...

"When you're in this type of situation and you're losing all the time, and there's nothing at the end of the tunnel for ya, there's certainly gonna be some frustration."

Whether he's saying he just doesn't like 'playing out the string', so to speak, or he's fed up with coaching a rebuilding team and is looking to move on, is up for debate.

But with the Flyers having lost 10 of their last 11 games, while surrendering 17 goals in their last 3, and falling to 28th place overall in the NHL, it's easy to suggest that Torts would love to move on.

Insider Elliotte Friedman, on NHL Network Radio this morning, said as much:

You can't help but look at that result last night, and his comments in the postgame, and say, 'Are we coming to a point here where Tortorella and the Flyers agree that it might be time?'

The Flyers had an unexpectedly strong regular season in 2023-24, and were in a playoff spot most of the year until a late-season swoon. This time around, it's been ugly from start to finish, and the team sold off several players at or before the deadline.

Tortorella has one year to run on his four-year contract, worth $4 million annually.
