Flyers News: Tortorella Says One Area of "Turmoil" Needs To Be Fixed

He was nervous about it coming into the season, and now five months in, he's seen nothing to change his mind. Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella still says that goaltending is the one area of "turmoil" that is in big need of a fix on his club.

Philly is dead last in the NHL in goaltending this season, with a team .873 save percentage, and are 28th in goals against per game, at 3.39.

Torts came into the season saying his team's mix between the pipes "scares the crap out of me," per NBC Sports Philadelphia. A couple of months back he doubled down on that, lamenting "When Carter (Hart) left (last season), that threw this into turmoil. It is what it is, we've lived with it, we continue to live with it and we do the best we can."

Now, in a recent interview, the head coach once again harped on the netminding being a prime area of concern going forward.

"I'm not laying blame, but that goaltending position, we have to fix that," he said. "You do not win in this game without good goaltending. It has not been good."

Ivan Fedotov has been a disaster as the main backup, with an .877 Sv% and a 5-13-3 mark. Alexei Kolosov has been no better, with an even worse .870 Sv% and a 4-8-1 record. Samuel Ersson has tried to keep the ship afloat in his 39 starts, going 19-14-5 but with an .880 Sv%.

Unfortunately, as we wrote about earlier this month, the free agent market this summer won't be of much help in finding their next goalie savior. They'll either have to hope for improvement from within, or make a big splash on the trade market.
