Insider: Edmonton Oilers Linked to Petr Mrazek Trade

To say that Spencer Knight made an auspicious debut for the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night is an understatement. The team's newest goaltender stopped 41 of 42 shots for a .967 save percentage in leading Chicago to a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. His arrival from Florida in the Seth Jones trade has changed the future of the crease in the Windy City.

The most obvious ramification of this development is that veteran Petr Mrazek has now become a trade candidate, as insider Frank Seravalli said on Daily Faceoff Live.

Obviously now a crowded crease for Chicago. They’ve got to make a move, I think. They’re going to try to this week with Petr Mrazek to flip him somewhere. I don’t think they’re looking for much in return, quite honestly, I don’t even know if they’re looking for anything at all.

And of course, there's at least one team that observers have wondered about their goaltending all season... Seravalli says the Edmonton Oilers, despite GM Stan Bowman's recent comments that he has no intentions of doing anything to change his netminding, must consider Mrazek, at least as a third option in goal. He has one year remaining on a $4.25 million cap hit.

I’m wondering if there’s a playoff team.. (clears throat).. Edmonton, that could use a guy that’s not going to have an acquisition cost. You just have to pay the third party broker to chop his pay in half. Get him down to $2.75M then you have him for next year as well. I know his numbers aren’t pretty this year, but he started out the year well and his numbers last year were excellent. I think he’s a pretty reliable bet for one more year at $2.75.

Mrazek does have a 10-19-2 record, an .890 save percentage and 3.46 goals against average in front of an awful Blackhawks team this year. But last season, in front of an equally bad Hawks squad, he had a .907 Sv% and 3.05 GAA. And up until 2021, before arriving on the rebuilding Hawks team, he was a very solid option.

Yes, the Oilers maintain that they have confidence in Stuart Skinner, but why not bring in Mrazek as a third man between the pipes in case of emergency?

Meanwhile, it appears the Hawks are going to be just fine going forward...
